Colin Jost is opening up about the lengths he’d go to to show his love for wife Scarlett Johansson–and even a dumpster diving adventure isn’t off the table. While hosting an episode of Pop Culture Jeopardy!, the Saturday Night Live star opened up about his experience living a rom-com scenario gone wrong one time when the Black Widow actress told him she’d accidentally lost her engagement ring.
The loss of Johansson’s multi-watt pear-shaped engagement ring–reportedly an 11-carat brown diamond design by Taffin de Givenchy that’s mounted on a curved black band–understandably caused some concern when the actress admitted she believed she “accidentally” threw the sparkler into the trash. Jost quickly rushed in to save the day, sharing, “I looked through 12 dumpsters of trash” on the Amazon Prime game show.
While he wasn’t able to find the ring within the garbage, Jost relied on his sense of humor when his efforts ended up being for nothing. “I went back to the house and she said, ‘Oops! It was in my pocket,'” he joked. “It was a great day for me.”

Jost didn’t share exactly when this situation happened, but the SNL star and Johansson tied the knot in October 2020. A source previously told People that the couple–who share 3-year-old son, Cosmo, and co-parent Johansson’s daughter Rose Dorothy, 10, with her ex Romain Dauriac–bonded over their shared sense of humor.
“Scarlett likes Colin’s sarcasm and wit,” the insider told the publication in 2019. “They share a love for acerbic humor and outrage at social issues gone bad. They have much in common.”

Since then, the Avengers: Endgame actress has gushed about their happy marriage during a November 2023 appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, calling the comedian “a very, very, very great guy.”
“I’m extremely lucky,” she told the hosts. “He’s a kind person and he’s hilarious and thoughtful and loving and he’s a great dad and I love him. I feel very, very lucky.”
