The WWE universe woke up to a rude shock on the previous night when Cena, it needs to be stated, appeared in the ring, but in a manner not given to astonishment. During an instant-grabbing contest, suddenly Cena threw his lot in with Jey Uso, grabbing the referee by the arm to drag him out of the ring as the unprovoked jaw-dropping attack transpired. This chaotic moment went viral and turned fans across the states into a rabble getting to make some sense of what the iconic wrestler did.

The irreversible denouement happened at the coming-up-to-the-minute time with Jey Uso actually on his way to winning. Just as the referee was about to put his hand down in acknowledgment of pinfall, Cena stepped in, pulled the official from the ring, and backstabbed Uso. The move was so distinct that even for good moments, the commentators had absolutely nothing to say as they tried to process what had just unfolded.
This made it so much more dramatic for Cody Rhodes to also make his first-ever post-Wrestlemania DVD appearance, hence bringing complexity to this siding. Some thanked him for it; others, however, questioned whether or not he deserved to be there at all, with one user referring to him as “the fraud who spoiled the end of the match.”
A mixed bag of reactions came through in social media. Some liked the uncertainty, with one even saying: “Cena is just so wild now,” while the others were rather skeptical. One harsh critic even went on to say, “Worse than [Roman] Reigns. So damn boring,” implying that he considered the heel turn by Cena to be the opposite of what they wanted.
The main question on everybody’s lips was, “How did the whole thing start with Cena attacking Jey Uso?” One baffled fan asked, “What does Cena have to do with him?”. Another speculated the mess could actually be fleshed out in a major storyline which may lead to a champion versus champion match at Night of Champions.
Interestingly, the audience was not all focusing on the drama in the ring: one user exploded with bad words about WWE programming, “There were matches? Jesus Christ with the adverts every 30 seconds,” effectively summing up the views of most at home.
Regardless, it seems pretty obvious that the WWE is playing with fan expectations, whether it be a one-off shock or amassing heaps of Morris. History, however, has taught us – anytime name John when thrown into the mixture, things never seem as straightforward as they first appear.
Some are now looking forward to the grand Cena-Rhodes bout at SummerSlam, while others are sighing with relief, saying, “About time Jey got some spotlight.”
Love them or loathe them, one thing is for sure; that incident from last night became the talking-point event engineered by WWE. With Cena’s retirement tour reputed to be going on in full, we might actually be looking at the beginnings of Cena’s most memorable closing full-length feature.
