Elvis Presley fans will get another fix of his unaugmented studio sessions on Aug. 1 when RCA/Legacy releases “Sunset Boulevard,” a five-CD boxed set that will focus on material the King was recording in Los Angeles during the last years of his life in the 1970s.
Also available in digital format, “Sunset Boulevard” promises 89 rarities, over half of which have never been previously released in the U.S., according to a press release.
To preview the set a month and a half our from the full offering, Sony Music has released “Burning Love (Take 2)” to digital services.
Beyond the full CD and digital iterations, here will also be a vinyl release — a two-LP set that will be made up of the first two discs from the five-CD collection.
The music contained in the vinyl double-album and the first two-fifths of the CD box is described as a “highlights” set. One of those discs will feature new, previously unreleased mixes from Grammy winner Matt Ross-Spang, in which all overdubs will have been removed from the recordings, “delivering fresh insights in the process,.” The second disc will feature select studio outtakes.
And or those who opt for the complete collection of music in CD or digital formats, the final three discs’ worth of material will offer “a behind-the-scenes look at Elvis’ history-making Las Vegas residency,” featuring Presley and his TCB Band engaged in rehearsals for the Vegas sting in L.A. in July 1970 and August 1974.
Fans may note that the 1974 recordings feature two songs that Presley never recorded a studio for: “Twelfth of Never,” a 1957 Johnny Mathis hit, and “Softly as I Leave You.” Among the more familiar tunes heard in the collection are rawer versions of Kris Kristofferson’s “For The Good Times,” Paul Williams’ “Where Do I Go From Here,” Billy Swan’s “I Can Help” and Don McLean’s “And I Love You So.”
The boxed set will include archival photos, new liner notes from music historian Colin Escott and an introduction by Presley’s longtime friend Jerry Schilling.
Vinyl buffs can also look out for a color vinyl version of the two-LP set that is exclusive to the Graceland store and website; the version in retail stores will be black vinyl.
During Elvis Week 2025 in Memphis, Sony Music will hold a listening event at Graceland’s Guest House Theater on Aug. 13, featuring a Q&A with special guests.
