It’s here… and by “it’s” I’m, of course, referring to spring. Okay, okay, if you live in New York City, you’ll know there are way more than four seasons (more like 12!!)—and right now, we’re in fool’s spring. It feels like spring, but spring isn’t officially here yet, meaning it can snow the next day. But, here’s my hot take on it all: Enjoy it while it lasts! And, in the meantime, relish in not overheating in your heavy-duty winter coat; instead, opt for a rich-looking, spring-perfect pick like Kate Hudson just did while you can.

Hudson was photographed out in the Big Apple, en route to an appearance on Good Morning America, where she talked all about her latest project, Netflix’s new series, Running Point. For the occasion, Hudson wore a long, sheer dress and blue slingback heels; but just mere moments before she walked on stage, she was wearing something different—err, well, something extra on top: a lightweight trench coat that’s the ideal top layer for these “fake” warm spring days.

Hudson also made a shoe swap before appearing on stage on Good Morning America; outside, the actress walked around Times Square in patent leather boots with a comfy block heel—a wise choice considering the fact that trekking around NYC in stilettos can be dangerous (those grates!). But let’s get back to the pièce de résistance: her trench coat, which isn’t just any regular ol’ trench coat.

The actress’s lightweight wrap-style trench is a must-have for the season ahead—it’s easy, it’s breezy, and it’s beautiful. While a classic trench (one designed in water-resistant material) is also a must-have, Hudson’s is crafted from a lighter material, likely rayon or possibly even silk, giving it a luxurious finish and that coveted, elegant sway. When it’s that time to pull out that “light” jacket, Hudson’s is an ideal option. Not to mention, it also pretty much makes any outfit; whether you’re wearing jeans or a skirt, look 10 times chicer.

So, while fake spring is upon us right now, real spring will be here in no time. In honor of its impending arrival, add some Hudson-inspired trench coats to your rotation, ASAP.
