After stops and starts on a biopic about her life and career, Madonna is turning to the limited series format to tell her story.
The music icon is teaming with producer and director Shawn Levy on a series project at Netflix. The limited series in the early stages of development at the streamer, where Levy’s 21 Laps company has an overall deal.
Netflix declined comment.
The Netflix project is not related to previous efforts to mount a feature film about Madonna. Julia Garner was considered the frontrunner to play Madonna in the film, which was set up at Universal Pictures but was scuttled in early 2023. Madonna hinted last year, via a social media post, that she was again at work on the film.
Since the development process is in its early days, it’s not clear whether the potential Netflix series would span Madonna’s entire life and career or a specific period within it. No writer is attached; Madonna wrote drafts of the feature script about her with Diablo Cody and Cressida Wilson.
Levy’s portfolio at Netflix includes Stranger Things, The Perfect Couple, All the Light We Cannot See and The Adam Project, among other titles. He directed and produced last year’s box office hit Deadpool & Wolverine.
Madonna is repped by CAA, Maverick Management, Untitled Entertainment and Grubman Shire. Levy and 21 Laps are repped by WME and Johnson Shapiro.
